I didn't pay attention when removing the flywheel from my small block 71. The flywheel has bolt holes that are indented on one side and protrudes on the other. My guess is the protrusions should face toward the torque converter and the indented side should face the engine. Can anyone confirm this or correct me?
Re: Which way does flywheel bolt on to engine? (dennisr)
Forgive me, but before I actually read the content of your post, I thought it was joke because its virtually impossible to bolt on a "flywheel" (manual tranny) the wrong way. As I read your post, I realized you were referring to the "flexplate" (automatic tranny) that the torque converter bolts to. :D
I believe you are correct, the indents which provide relief for the bolt heads face the engine. A telltale sign is to look at the plate's starter gear teeth. You'll see a wear pattern that favors the engine side since the starter gear engages (& wears) the front of the teeth more than the rear.
Re: Which way does flywheel bolt on to engine? (dennisr)
Im not 100% sure about this but I think the crank and flexplate/flywheel bolts are drilled a bit offset. In order for the bolt holes to line up, it has to be correct. In other words, Its impossible to put it on incorrectly and get all the bolts in. I could be wrong but I know that some are that way.
