I notice that when I put my 76 in park on a slight incline the car moves/rolls back and kind of shudders as it does so. After I stop the car with the brake, the trans will hold it. The car shifts and runs perfect with no strange noises- the trans fluid appears like new (pink - no burnt smell). The pan is wet from fluid and occasionally I will have a good size puddle of trans fluid after sitting overnight. Is this sign of a major problem? What can I check?
How often do you drive the car? Does this occur just after start up?
As a rule, I never park a car on an incline using the tranny to hold the car. Mainly because I hate the KLUNK of engaging the transmission when I put it into gear. I always hold the brakes, put it in neutral, engage the parking brake, then put it in park. Emergency brakes are cheaper than transmissions.
You mentioned that it "gets wet". Where? At the gasket line? At the vacuum modulator? Most likely your problem is a gasket/seal leak. Replace the gasket with a GOOD one (rubber/synthetic impregnated). If your vacuum modulator diaphragm is ruptured [does it shift particularly hard?], that could be the source of leakage. The only other areas of leakage are the oil filler tube seal, the cooler lines, or any pipe plugs on the outside of the case. If you check your level regularly and it doesn't appear to be losing much oil, it is probably just a "drip" problem.
