Default Distributor .....

Is there a kit to rebuild a distributor for my 1981? I hate to spend the money for a new one if the old one can be rebuilt. TIA

I'll be interested in this as well. I spent quite some time trying to isolate a tick. i finally bought one of those mechanics stethescopes which isolated it to the distributor.

A neat tool by the way. More cool than a screwdriver on my forehead.

Are you sure you have to rebuild your distributor? If you hear a tick that usually means you have a spark jumping. That could be a crack in the distributor cap or a bad wire no necessarily a distributor in need of rebuild. Is the main shaft worn? Does it have play in it?

Check some of the catalogs- Dr. Rebuild, Paragon, and some of the others. The carry distributor parts like the main shaft, lower drive gears, or croos shafts. You would need to pull your distributor and tear it down to see what needs to be replaced.

Thanks, perhaps the tick in vicinity of my dist cap is the reason for my slight miss.

You can get a performance tune-up kit from Petronics...seen them on ebay as well as Summit or Jegs. Does not include the pick-up coil or any new bushings.

I bent the main shaft of my '81 distributor trying to get the different parts off the shaft in order to replace the pick-up coil.....ended up just getting a complete new distributor from Performance Distributor. If you go this route, do not throw away your old distributor as I found the 4 pin mating connector on the new distributor did not match up exactly with the car's connector.....one small keying tab was not correct. So I had to use the harness from the old distributor...not a big deal...took 5 minutes to change out.

Performance Distributors is online.
