Reverse
I have a 81 vette with the 4 speed in it. I am having trouble putting the car in reverse. I know its there because I have driven it in reverse last week. If you pull up on t on the shifter it doesn't do anything. I unscrewed the shifter **** and there is a rod inside not connected to anything. What do I need to do. The car has been setting several years in storage. It's probally something stuck but a shot of WD40 didn't do it ant good.

The rod in the shifter shouldn't be connected to anything. I suspect your linkage on the transmission itself (under the car) is out of adjustment assuming you have the stock linkage. I can't tell you which way to adjust it, but there is a specific link rod for reverse. You will have to loosen up the nuts on the rod and adjust them in or out until the shifting is better.

If the rod in the shifter handle doesn't connect to anything how does it function? Is there a spring loaded something or other in the shifter that this thing disengages when you pull up on the T?

Another thought. The rod should be attached to the t-handle so that it lifts with it. Is it broken?

Yes it is seperate from the T part. If it is suppose to attached to the T then it is definately broken. So from what you are saying if I were to remove the rod from the shifter since its already broken it should go over to the left so I can hit reverse?

Well that explains a lot. I'll have to get the JB Weld out tonight and get this vette back on the road. I bought it for $5,000 and it came with about 2,000 worth of parts and new door seals. I found it in a garage after it had been sitting for 6 years. The guy who bought it had a heart attack and his wife never learned to drive a stick. 84,000 original miles . thank you for the feed back.
