Default stroker cam ?

Will a comp cam XS290 solid lifter cam be too much for this combo?

cam specs- 290/298 252/260 .576/.598(1.6 rockers) 110LSA

Stroker 4.040 X 3.75
forged bottom end
11.1 compression
200cc Pro-topline alum. 2.02, 64cc
victor jr. intake w/1" HVH super sucker spacer
harland sharp roller rockers
750 speed demon carb
1 5/8" headers ( 1 7/8 hookers w/ sidepipes eventually)
4spd 3.73 gears

I want a 6,500-7,000 rpm motor and mean sounding idle, but I still have to power my power brakes. Will this cam be a good match for this combo?

Thanks,

L-82Kid

IMO, it's got quite a bit of duration, but you're running a 4spd, so it may be tolerable....expect to sacrifice some bottom end torque, but it seems you are looking for top end HP so overall it's a good choice if your car is more "strip" than street.....as for vacuum, I'd call Comp Cams and refer to their recommendations for your needs.

P.S.......It WILL have a wicked idle.

thats alot of duration.....Heads might be a hair small for the cam, (2.02/1.60) is more suited for "hot street"....with that cam you might want to think about vacuum assist as you will have very little.

My setup is similar (383/forged 10.76:1..competition port/polish on aluminum rpm heads 64cc (2.02/1.60), mighty demon 750, rpm intake, 4-speed....I went hydraulic roller 286HR .56/.56 lift and only 230/230 duration @ .050......still gonnna have a mighty idle. good luck.

I'm running a Comp cam hyd in a 383
280h, 230-230, .48 lift, I also have 1.6 rocker on top of this.
I have 12'' of vacuum at idle, I have not checked it at speed. It is just enough to run the vac advance, headlamps and power brakes.
You may have to run a vac pump with that cam.

280h, 230-230, .48 lift,
I'm running that same cam now in my 350. Theres not too much power in the low rpm but it pulls hard from 3,000 rpm up to 6,000. My brakes work fine but the headlights open really slow.

It will have this alright! mean sounding idle

I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to solid cams. I always went for go not show. The biggest cam I used in my 383 with flat top 64 cc heads was 240/248 112 lc.

At Wed. night cruises many cars had bad a$$ sounding machines with radical cams like yours. The 4 speed will help. I have a 13 meg movie I did with my 383 of a startup and idle. My digital camera sound kind of goes into overload from the noise. I could e-mail it to you.

I ran mine to 7500 rpm on a regular basis and the hot rodded Vipers could not take me on road racing courses on the straights from 70 mph -140 before braking

That is the exact cam I just put in my 385 stroker. Don't let them tell you it is to much duration. It is not. It runs fine. It is a little soggy below 2500 rpm but hang on after that. I have run it down and cruised it at 2000 rpm with no problem. My heads are slightly smaller but that should not make a difference. If you want a low rpm cruiser step down. If you want one that really makes power than stick with that cam. I am going to run a 825 Mighty Demon once I get the fuel line hooked up. Running a 750 DP that is to lean right now.

ProTopline flow #'s are comprable to AFR. I think 200cc will be just fine...

The stroker gives you more torque in the low end, mine starts to pull good at 22-2300 and comes on hard at 2500

No sound clips yet. My new water pump has been giving me fits. I'm going to put the old one back on. I have not put to many miles on it yet. Fixing up the fuel line today and should be back together tomorrow. Just in time for rain.

I don't have vacuum brakes. I have a hydroboost. I used to run a 248 @ .050 with my 350 and it idled at 11 inches of vacuum so this motor should be about the same.
