i need to repair the shift console plate on my 70 coupe. the screw tabs are broken off. i got a repair kit from ecklers, but it looks like theres a lot of things that have to come off to get the shift console out ..does anyone know what needs to be removed. like dash ,gauge bezel , e-brake console, or anything else. if dash has to come off, where are all the mounting points. :smash: :smash:
Order an assembly manual. The illustrations are great references for Corvette maintenance. Console plate will lift out from the top after the four corner trim screws are removed. You should expect to find the rear fiber options lens, a ground wire, and the lighter wiring attached to the console trim plate. Be careful with the hot lead to the lighter or you'll be blowing fuses. At this point, you might be able to install the Eckler's fix-it kit without going further. If you need to pull the console, you will find trim screws along each side. You will also have to remove the e-brake console. The final bolt is accessible through the glove box opening (glove box has to come out). At the front of the console you will find two screws holding the console and reinforcement to the tranny tunnel and you should look for two screws at the bottom of the factory stereo, passing through the console, and securing the stereo. Sometimes these are there, and sometimes they aren't. If they are not there, you can bet the stereo has been removed at some point in the past. With everything loose, you will be able to lift the console clear of the heater controls and out of the car.
