Default Carb question?

i have a 1978 corvette with the original rochester carb in it. im still trying to figure out how to set the choke on it cause im having a lot of problems with it. i got it set but it runs at like 1800-2000 rpms when i start the car. it doesnt turn off until temperatures hit 150-160. the setting that i have it at is higher than what is marked on the choke markers. from the center i turned it to so the screw driver is facing perfectly straight up. to make it easier to understand if u turned a screw the flat head screw would be straight like this (|). i live in florida so its going to work a lot differenly on my car than most around the country. especially with the fact that i am at 5 feet above sea level. thats about the only problem i have with my choke is that it runs so damn long with it on.

I believe you have a "hot air" choke. the carb pulls a bit of air over the coil from a steel tube that dips into your intake at the heat crossover. if the carb choke hole is plugged, the tube is missing/broken so that you don't pull this warmed air over the coil it will take a full warmup to come off fast idle. it is easy to switch to an electric choke - get a kit from Summit, etc.

I can't think of a single good reason to switch the '78 choke system over to a manual system. The '78 hot air choke is an excellent choke system that works very well. If your idle speed is too high, just lower it to the spec speed. If the choke is staying on too long, adjust it. If you need instructions, drop me an e-mail request for my choke setup paper.
