Default Generic Iron 2.02 Heads

1979 L-82...51k original miles.
I attempted a sidepipe install last night.
Should be done....but...

butt.....

One head bolt broke...had 1/4" stub sticking out....would NOT come out.
torch, and special stud removal pliers.
VERY LAST EX-manifold bolt...dead center...drivers side, behind the razor sharp heat shields.

Then buddy had the idea of heating cherry (again) and throwing cold water to "shrink" it....ehhhh...turns brittle and hard.
Grounded flush...attempt to drill...no luck...head had to come off.

A valve cover bolt was broke and been broke for years(Bubba) but didnt leak...that too refused to budge.

So; I tore out the heads this morning...

Looking at these:
Summit 2.02 Iron Heads

ready to go, jsut add parts and gaskets...low $$...proper valve seats for todays fuel.
Accessory mounting locations.

Best of all....in stock and can ship Monday.
Rush is; I was trying to get the sidepipe install done as a graduation gift for my son...his last week of school is next week.
I suspect they are better than original 79 L-82 heads....flow seems better...originals were pitiful castings...will get pics later and add to this thread to show ****-poor castings.

I am NOT looking to build HP per se'...better breathing is a cool bonus though.

Machine shop would be 2 weeks and more $$ cutting old seats out, mill, valve guides, ect...

What do you think?...any experiences?

Also; spark plug wires are still routed behind the stock shield right on the lower portion of the engine block...is this a good time to move them since I am putting headers?...or leave?
I am NOT particularily fond of them being right up on the block.

At one point there was a link to a vendor that sold parts like this (and crate motors) with little $$$...was a locked thread when people complained about how complicated his site was..."greenwoodchevy"?

I gotta get some heads fast, and at least have this done by Wednesday night....

All help...ideas (that dont advise to drill out old heads), and links would be appreciated...
A link with good prices with good heads especially appreciated!

Thanks,
Jim

Jim: They say the Summit heads are Dart or World (I can't remember which). Anyways, sound like the ones you're looking at are decent heads but I don't know you exact setup. I suspect your intact runner number needs to be between 180-200 for your application if it is mostly street but want some performance also.

I believe they are Dart. I have this set and have been pretty happy with them Can't beat them for the price. I haven't done much to boost the HP other than the heads but have noticed some difference. I noticed lots of difference when I had my emissions tested. Huge improvement.

MarshRat--Thanks

Its all stock...
unless you count:
Modern HEI 65kvolts
K&N air filter...
thats it...

will be able to say "headers and sidepipes"; soon as I figure what heads to get...lol

Stock QJet, intake, cam, ect...

When I get the pics...you wont believe how choked the original head's are because of casting (well; you may already know).

Those Summit heads list 165cc intake runners..I cant see where the stock heads have that...maybe they do, but I dont see how.

Thanks,
Jim

For what it's worth, I have a set of '79 L-82 heads sitting in my garage in Edlebrock shipping boxes.

A couple of bucks and shipping and they could be yours.

Thats them Rick!!!!...thanks...just searched their site, Summit still has them beat for fully assembled World heads.
But I bookmarked the site anyway...for later use.

Tony's96---what condition are the heads in?...rebuilt for todays fuel?...new valve stem seals?...I gotta get a set TODAY on order, and I need them ready to install...no work or "ify" needed.

These probably aren't the set you want, they came off a 116k engine, just took them off and put them in some boxes, they're complete, but would at least need a serious cleaning and stem seals, the valves actually looked pretty good.

I have the intake and carb as well,

Thanks Tony---you are right...dont need them.
I would do the originals if I had machine shop time and baby sitting quality.

I am looking at the option of less $$ for Summit heads vs. the World heads and putting that$180.00 towards faster shipping.
Maybe get it done before Wednesday.
Gotta clean parts.
Work.
Pre-fish a lake for a tourney Thur.
But I want the car done and son driving the last week of school/graduation.

Hindsight; I would of waited to install the sidepipes until next Sat.
I never thought a two hour job would turn into this:

check out the casting:

Hope you get it done for your son...

I finished my "stroker" install and got mine running for my son's visit home. He's in the Air Force and had two weeks at home between deployments in the Azores and Japan.

He had a great time giving all his friends rides...after the last ride he cautioned me about not driving fast on a local highway for a while...seems there was this Porsche and a policeman involved.
