Default What's the difference...?

Between an "L-88" hood and a "big block" hood? I always assumed they were the same until reading something recently indicating otherwise.

Need something to cover-up my pending TPI swap...

Big Block/Lt1 hood blends into the hood at the back edge (no opening). An L88 hood is taller at the back and is open for fresh air.

Do they look similar? e.g. L88 = big block hood with a bigger "hump"?

My sig pic has the L-88. Much higher than a BB/LT-1 hood. Was there a BB hood in '74?

Is that a GM BB hood or just a hi-rise hood? I don't recall having seen that hood in a stock set-up.

I believe the 454 fit under the stock (SB) hood in '74. My TPI probably won't, so I'll need something taller. I'm also installing L88 light covers and sidepipes, so the taller hood won't look too out-of-place on my '74.

L-88 gives you about 2" more room than the LT1/BB hood.

How much more room does the LT1 hood give you over stock? I don't think I'll need too much to fit my TPI.

The difference is:

L-88 hood questions go in Tech/Perf
BB hood questions go in Gen

Although the mention of a TPI swap might be enough to keep this one in Tech

obviously, the L-88 hood was only used in 68 and 69 with the L-88 option. The bigblock hood was used in 68 -72. To the experienced eye there is a big and obvious difference. Perhaps the most obvious difference, aside from the height difference is the 2 chrome inserts used on the bigblock hood. I believe the 73 and 74 bigblock cars used the same hood as the smallblock cars.

Tony, what year do you have? With aftermarket hoods you have to consider whether you have a wiper door (68-72) or not.

Yes, '73 & '74 used the "small block" hood, regardless of the motor.

My car is a '74. I believe Vanacor makes both the L-88 and LT-1 hoods in the later-model "long" version to fit my car.
