I voted "keep it!", but mine (original) disintegrated spontaneously some time ago, when it was just sitting in the garage. Wish I had a digital camera to show its remains. Until I have money to buy another one (you know, low priority...), I'll just use the carrier to carry stuff when I travel. If you want to remove the tire to cut weight, then I'd say keep the carrier and use it to carry stuff: bags, tools, whatever. :D
Yeah, I took mine out because it's ~18 years old and doesn't hold air. It's kind of heavy too so I took it out and maybe I'll get a little more gas mileage because of the decreased weight. Although now my car is REALLY loud just letting it cruise in the 1000-1500 rpm range. Not sure if it's because the tire's not there to dampen the noise or if it's an exhaust problem.
I'm with you guys, get-it-ta-hell-outa-here. Red73 nice looking butt ya have there, I don't have a rear pic of mine I'll have to get one the next time I have a digital camera available. I have side exhaust so my butt even trimer than your, and we all know we love nice butts
Mr69Vett, nice looking vette, love your "T" tops. It's like looking at a nice butt wearing a thong (with spare tire and carrier) vs a nice butt wearing a bathing suit. Take the pipes off and your looking at a nice butt on a nude beach:cheers:
I always liked those tops, but I could never figure out really why, now that you courralate them to thongs, I have seen the light, thanks I owe ya one
They are extra weight! You never have flat! Even if you did you don't carry any tools to change it. The other thing is I would not drive a big buck posi with a differrent size tire. I still have the original in a box never used for twenty years.
Once I avoided a wreck and blew two tires and rims. I just said to my self you can't hurt them now and drove a couple miles slow...... I always have had Z-rated.
If you look in your owner's manual you will find the recommendation that you always keep a fully inflated spare tire in the carrier for energy management in case of a rear end collision. It was designed as part of the rear end structure in case of an accident.
If you drive fast enough. Your never going to get rear ended. If your worried about personal safety you would have a roll cage - fire system - 5 point seat belts.
I choose to keep mine. Actually my spare was missing when I bought the car and I went out of my way to pick one up.
1. Flat tires DO HAPPEN. In my company vehicle (Ford E-250) which gets most of the miles I average one flat a year, this is with heavy duty high pressure off road tires. Had a flat two weeks ago. So far I've been lucky with the Vette as I tend to keep it on much nicer roads.
2. When a flat does happen I pull over, remove the spare, jack and lug wrench. In all of 10 minutes I'm back on the road. Also keep a full line of tools in that compartment in case of any other emergency breakdown.
3. Spare is full size so no damage to posi unit.
4. Spare is part of the structural integrity of the car. If I'm stopped in a traffic jam or at a stoplight and some drunk decides to rear end me I'll take the slightly added benefit that the tire may keep the gas tank from rupturing which in turn may keep me from burning alive.
5. There's nothing more pathetic than seeing a man standing with a cell phone next to his broken down car waiting for a tow truck driver to change his tire :bb
I agree
I wouldn't want to leave my car on the road because of no spare.
If you are concerned about weight, you could pick up an old 15x7"
mag wheel, powdercoat in black, & mount a narrower tire on it.
1. I've been driving for 29 years and have never had a flat tire.
2. Fix a flat, cell phone and AAA.
3. If I got rearended I would be more concerned about my luggage rack coming through my back window than I would be about saving my posi unit.
:D
4. Structural integrity of the car! So I don't need a frame if I have my spare tire. Based on the bumper height on SUVs and trucks I don't think that spare tire is going to do me any good when I get hit in the rearend by a Ford 250. At least I know my posi unit is safe. And if I remember correctly, my gas tank was above my spare and not protected behind the spare:seeya
5. I don't mind calling AAA. That's a well spent $79 annually to cover my 3 vehicles.

6. I guess I should just grab my ankles and kiss my ___ goodby. :jester
As gkull pointed out, 2 different size tires in back can ruin your posi unit....
so..... If your spare is a different diameter from your flat tire,
....and... you got a flat in the rear.....
....and.... you really felt like changing the tire...
well, then you should replace bad rear with good front tire and put spare up front. If front and back are different sized, then you are cranberryjuiced!
