Default 76 A/C control

When one turns the wheel to A/C on the control panel, what actually happens that tells the compressor to start? Is there a mechanical or electrical switch ? If there is a switch, where is it located? The compressor runs and cools when jumped from the alternator. I had the dash and console out and replaced both. Where might I look for something disconnected? There are two terminals by the fuse panel going no where. One is a white terminal the other black. Both are male and have light brown wire. Fuse is okay.

Good questioin
I had my console apart recently and dont recall seeing any wires going to the selector, just a mass of vacuum lines

Try tracing the wires off the compressor and look for a relay, or pull the shift plate off the console and double check there isnt a wire for the ac

Ignition heat shields make great grounds. Tracing the brown wire back from the compressor I discovered it is routed under the distributor heat shield and as one might guess in a 30 year old daily driver, there was the brown wire, wire exposed touching the heat shield. Moved to wire away from the hear shield and the compressor started! Thanks for the suggestion.

The Vaccume Controls Are For The Various Accuators That Open Close For Heat Defrost,,,,,,,,,,,,,max Air Closes Fresh Air While Closing Cabin Air(to Recirrulate Cabin Air) The Compressor Has A Set Of Contact Points That Close When The Wheel Is Put On A/c. The Points Close Allowing Current To Flow To Compressor.its Under The Console To The Right Of The Vaccume Switch
