Okay, I know this has been gone over before, but the search isn't turning up the thread I am looking for. How do you wire a mini starter when it has one less terminal than the original starter  ? It's been months since I put the thing on, and I can't find the destructions anymore. What is happening is that the motor turns over fine, but will not fire until I let off the key in the ignition, thus I think I am not getting 12 volts to the coil when I am turning it over. I don't want to just randomly change wires. Can someone tell me how the wires go please? I really want to drive my car (for the first time in 3 months! :cry)
AC - Boy this is a switch, usually it's me asking you! :D The mini starter on mine only has two wires. Of course the main positive lead direct from the battery to the big post, and then the purple lead from the key start circuit connected to the solenoid. You may also have a yellow lead from the sol post back to the coil to insure full 12 volts to the coil during starter engagement.
From your post I think you are still running points? So you have a ballast resistor to the coil, limiting voltage. You are correct in that you do not get enough voltage to the coil during cranking. If the starter is missing the 3rd terminal I don't know of a easy way to hook it up. The best I can think of would be a relay. The relay would be hooked up like this:
Relay coil, one terminal to ground, the other to the starter wire (hot in start).
Common to 12V source. NO (normally open) terminal to coil.
Yeah, Markus.... I hear what you are saying. Currently I am running the stock distributor with a Mallory Unilite module. I have read however, that I don't need the third terminal with an HEI, so I may go that route. I needed an excuse to upgrade my ignition anyway.
