Default Camshaft choice

I have a 1972 350 base, it is getting poked and stroked with a 383 kit, eagles kit with flat top pistons .040 over, 64cc aluminum heads, rpm air gap, speeddemon 750 cfm carb, hooker super comp side pipe headers, should be around 10:1 compression. I have the comp cams xe268 in it, I am wondering wether to go bigger since I am having the transmission and a new TC put in as well. It has a .477 int and .480 ext. lift, any one run close to the set up I am doing and any suggestions for cams would be great, I want to still be streetable and re-gearing the rear end is not an option. It has 3.36 gears.

Yes go bigger. That cam is a small cam in a 350. The 383 will take more cam and run much better.

Check out the latest Chevy Hi Perf magazine. They tested like six hydraulic roller comp cams in a 383. Mild to wild. Complete with charts and graphs. The best all around torque and power cam from a cam very much like the LT4 Hot Cam I plan to use.

There should be a ton of people running that cam. It should be decent for a driver. You could pick up some ponies with larger cam. Its a matter of where you want to be at the end. The tiny L-48 cam worked great driving around town. Even on the highway at 60-75mph it doesn't take 400hp.
My thoughts are you are leaving some ponies on the table, but them ponies have no affect on routine driving.

I'll disagree. With an automatic, 3.36's, a 27" (+/-) tire, and a 3600 lbs car, I don't think you'll be happy with more cam unless you're at the track running WOT.

And not to stir it up, but I'm no fan of the XE line of cams. There are simply way too many reports of wiped lobes and noisy valve-trains with these cams.

Purely my opinion.

I am going with a Hydraulic Roller, Crane Cams #119831, it is grind HR-284-2S-12 IG, it is a 2500 to 6000 rpm range cam, 284/292 advanced duration, .509/.528 lift, duration @ .050 is 222/230, is anyone running this in a 383 Stroker from here? Just curious what to expect?

That is the cam in the ZZ383 GM crate, 425 hp and 460 tq with the Fast-Burn heads so if you have comprabable heads you should be about there, I ran that cam in a 350 and it gets rocking about 3000 rpm's so would probably pull hard at 2500 in a 383, you could go a grind higher with the 383 and have plenty of low end torq

I should be pretty good to go then, I am putting on 4.040 bore flat top pistons with Alum 64cc Heads, roller tip rocker arms, rpm air gap, 750 speed demon, hooker super comp sidepipes, pete jackson gear drive, MSD 6al & msd dist, 2200 rpm converter, rebuilt th400 with shift kit. The only thing I have with pulleys on the crank is alt & ps. The Be Cool radiator cools up to 600hp with no fan.

What is wrong with the 268 cam?? How do you drive the car?? Do you want it to pull off the line, or are you looking for top end?? I would assume with 3.36 gears and an automatic you are not looking for a 1/4 mile car..
I am sure this will **** everyone off, but I have built 100 plus engines in my life, and tried all kinds of combos, and watched friends ect.. Here is what I just put together..

350 engine
350 turbo trans
stock dish pistons 8.2 cp
stock 76cc heads (I did a valve job and milled them just .005)
cast crank(stock)
I used an RV cam 252-260 duration 600-4000rpm
424-447 lift 107 lobe center
Holley 750 (I rebuilt and jetted)
Standard 4 barrel intake
373 rear gears w/27 inch tires.
dynomax headers

This set up seems pretty boring, and it is, but I tell you what..The pull out of this corvette now compared to stock is wonderful. No lumpy idle ect, but it runs on the street, gets good gas mileage and when you hit the gas, it chirps 2nd, and 3rd gears and puts you back in the seat.

If you want it to sound COOL and impress allthe guys at an idle with a lumpy cam ect, do it the way others tell you. I would go with the 268 cam or smaller...JMO

No, I could care less with what anyone else thinks, I, live in a smaller counrty town so the majority of my driving is on the highway. At 3000 rpms I am at 70mph witch is good for me, considering on my jeep I am at 9mpg with my 4.56 gears and both axles with detroit true tracs. I think I am the only guy in town that can start out in fifth gear. 4wd of course.
The jeep is the slow torque monster, when I am in the vette I am all about top end. The stock set up I couldn't even get to 100 mph, after the xe268 and head work I could go to 110 mph. I am only bumping it up 200 on the rpm range, but huge in the lift department. The actual @ .050 duration is smiiliar with the XE 268(224/230) and the new Crane HR(222/230). The lift is going from XE 268(.477/.480) to Crane(.509/.528) so really my duration is not changing just the valve lift and going from a flat tappet to a much less friction hyraulic roller.
