Default PS steers hard when not moving

I've replaced the valve and hoses a couple of years ago.
When sitting still it turns hard. When rolling it steers fine.
No leaks, Fluid level is fine.

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance,
JU

might be a stupid question but if you bring the RPMs up while in neutral or park does it turn easier?
if so is it possible that your PS pump was replaced by one with a larger pully at some time?
not sure if this makes sense but it sounds like the PS isnt turning fast enough at low rpms

These cars don't have power steering designed to be effortless like your Dad's Buick! I think it's normal but I could be wrong.

Hope that helps. I really wasn't trying to be so flippant with my original response but I can see that it really came across that way!

I have had 2 1970's...both of them were a little more difficult to turn at standstill than when driving....both of them original pumps and pullies.

They were the same even after one was rebuilt and the other replaced...unless it is not working when moving or making unusual noises, I wouldn't worry about it.

stupid question, but did you balance the valve after you installed it? The rebuilt ones aren't always set up ready to go.

Thanks for the ideas.
I added more fluid...(over the cold mark when cold) I ran the steering lock to lock a few times and drove it around a while and stopped and turned the wheel and it's better!
I'm afraid of blowing a hose by overfilling it too much!
I pulled my receipts and it was back in '01 when I replaced the valve and hoses....wow time flys, I owned it for 15 years now

If I am not mistaken, the PS cap has a relief valve in it...if it is overful, it comes out of the middle of the cap.

Can anyone back me on this one?

Not directly but I can assure you that you certainly are NOT GOING TO blow a hose by having too much fluid in the pump. Can't happen. Fluid will come out the cap though if overfilled. Remember that Dextron expands when it's hot so you don't want to be within a half inch of the top of the resevoir when hot.

I have been experiencing a similar situation with the car in a standing position. Only in my case, it is a very slight pulsation that occurs when the wheel is turned while the car is stopped.

I was told by Cardone remanfactured parts that it sounds like either a sticking flow valve in the ps pump or air. And that I should try removing the pressure side nut fitting on the pump, pull out the flow valve & polish the surface w/ fine emery cloth. Wash it off, reinstall it & make sure it moves in & out freely. If that doesn't work try to vacuum bleed the system.

I removed the pressure hose at the pump and at first I simply used a cotter pin to push the valve and found that the valve did feel like it is sticking. It did not slide back and forth easily. I checked the valve in the old original pump and the valve in the old pump did slides freely. So I simply took the valve from inside the old pump and placed it in the new pump. I really wanted to just take the pump in and get a refund, but I thought I would try changing the valve just to see if it made a difference. Well, changing the vavles did make a big difference. It reduced the pusation about 80%. When I reported that information back to the remanfacturing company rep., we both agreed to run the car like it is for a few weeks to see if the condition improves. Well, it has been a few weeks and nothing has changed.

At this point, I am thinking about returning the pump for a full refund and going out and buying an AC Delco remanfactured pump.

In researching this problem I have found that not all ps pumps are remanufactured the same. Here's the info directly from the AC Delco website. http://www.acdelco.com/

AC Delco - Remanufactured Power Steering Pumps

* Uses 100 percent new, premium-grade seals including high-temperature Viton® seals to help provide better durability and reliability
* Surface wear on Campacks is microfinished to original tolerances to help provide better durability and quieter pump operation
* Seal surface on Input shafts are microfinished for conformance to original specifications for precise fit and leak-free sealing
* ACDelco Pumps are thoroughly tested twice – once by simulated driving conditions and a second time by low-pressure submersion to help deliver superb performance and quality
