Does anyone know what wires I should use to see if my starter is getting power when I turn the key to the run position?
The starter has 3 studs, 1- is large and has what seems like a battery cable on it, it also has 3 small wires that are fusable links on the same large stud. 2-the second stud is small and only has one small wire on it. 3- the third stud is also small and has no wires on it. I want to see if my starter is getting power when I turn the key to the run position. I am unable to get the car started and after checking everything I want to eliminate the rebuilt starter I bought 6 months ago. Thanks for any help.
I do all my own mechanical work, but I'm not to good with the electrical stuff. Thanks for any help.
well, the big stud is battery, the small wires on the same post are power distribution to various points that are hot all the time. The one small stud (there are two) should be the start wire coming from the key switch and the other stud if it was connected would be the run wire for ignition. If you have a test light connect it to the small stud with the wire and turn the key, should light up and car should turn over. Obviously the big wire should have 12v at all times. Look carefully at all the ground connections; battery to frame, engine block to frame. They will all be large cable or a flat ribon type cable. Clean connections is important
With the key in the run position the starter will not be affected. With the key in the start position the small wire at the starter should be hot.I guess when you put the starter on the car started.Ok the small term. closest to the rt. fender should have the wire on it,if not change it.If the wiring is correct you can take a jumper from the big term. to the small one and this should fire the starter. If the key is on it should run otherwise it will only crank. If this makes it crank you could have a neutral safety switch failure. If it cranks but wont fire then you should check for 12 volts at the dist.
Roger ps.dont use the small term closest to the block its for a points ign. car
