Default 82 Hood Release Question

The hood on my 82 only releases only on the left (drivers) side. Need advice on easiest way to get right side to release so I can get the hood up. Any ideas on what might be wrong besides a broken cable, etc.

If you look in the wiper cowl just next to where the plastic grille is, there's a black plastic plug, remove that and insert a screwdriver into the hole, a bit of poking around should let you press against the latch lever and unlock it.

Cross-over cable likely broken.

I ended up taking mine to the guy that works on my Vette when mine broke.

Good luck!

The mounting tabs break causing it not to release on the RH side. Either repair the mounts or change the cable.

I must be overlooking something. I dont see a hole or knockout to put a screwdriver through on my 82 to trip the latch.

Here’s a pic that might help you locate the hole in yours. Mine is an ’80, but it should be similar.

I had it happen once as well. Going forward, it’s best to do a little preventative maintenance, but just in case, I added a couple of small cables that I can get to from the underside..

my 76 did the same thing... and still doesnt.. I dont know for to "fix" the problem but when I need to get under the hood I pull the release. Then I lift the hood a little and slide my hand under and pull the cable to release the passenger side. I know what I need to do to fix it.. I'm not sure how to.. my cable is old and the tension on it is gone. I need to tighten it...

Just put the wipers in the upright position and you will see a plastic or rubber gromet about the size of a quarter, push it in with the screwdriver.

There are 2 ways to improve the tension if the tabs are not the problem, and the cable is good. The hood pull cable can be adjusted (small nut on a stiff wire that leads to the interior) and the hood cable has a large tab at the drivers side with different holes to use to create more tension held by a small cotter pin. good luck

the left side releases right by cross cable.if the cross cable housing breaks it will not release.that does not mean the metal cable is broken.raise the hood up gently on the left ,slide your hand in under the hood palm down to the right of the latch and grab cable that is laying on top of distributor cover and pull gently and if your lucky and the metal cable is not broken the hood will pop on right side. Then replace it GM #473284 or ecklers #A2466.
