MSD Digital E-Curve Pro Billet Distributor is what I've had since last year. Like most things MSD sells they didn't put alot of real world thought into it. It's about money.
IMO - So what if you have 100 timing curve choices. I've only tried 4 or so. Any motor can only use a few of the choices. My heads make the most power at 32-34 degrees of advance.
So the MSD gives you the choices of 10-15-20-25-30 degrees of advance
Do the math. if I choose 15 degrees additional advance. My initial has to be 17-19 degrees. If I change the dial to the 20 degrees advance my initial is 12-14 degrees. Then the other dial is what RPM is all the advance in. The choices are something like locked out and 2500-2750-3000-3250. So left it 3000.
I have to pay sales tax down at Summit Racing. So the dist. is about $400, Crane digital Multi spark and coil $300, Taylor pro wires $130. It's about $800 to fire the plugs.
Crane Cams also has one out now. I'd like to see the possible settings to campare them
I'm using a Crane "Street Race" distributor, Crane Hi-6 ignition, and Crane LX92 Coil. It has less centrifugal and vacuum advance options than the MSD E-Curve but it's more than good enough for my needs. Beats the heck out of my old GM HEI distributor with sticky advance weights.
However, I have a worn cam gear and I suspect it is causing somewhat inconsistent timing no matter how tricky dicky my new distributor is.
I'm sure that a properly set-up conventional distributor can perform just as well as these new-tech gadgets. These new digital distributors are quick to set up and should remain consistent over the long haul. Almost a set it and forget it sort of deal.
I'd really like to see a dyno comparison between the digital Crane, MSD and conventional/mechanical advance style distributors to see the difference in various selections of advance curve settings.
