I had a big box built for my 77 when I got it, had 2 8" kicker woofers and 2 3x5 tweeters put in it and a 140watt kenwood amp. The bow was wide enough to just fit in the back behind the seats, went from the window all the way to the back of the tunnel and had just enough clearence under it to slide the t-tops under it with them nested together in the bags. Amp was mounted to the front between the woofers.
I went to walmart and bought the el cheapo speaker box system for about $20-$30. The box is nicely made and with all the hardware and it fits perfectly in the compartment of my convertible. Just take out the cheap speakers and replace with the ones of your choice. You can't build a better box for that price when you consider the cost of your time.
todbo,
Do you have any baffles or insulation or reflex ports in your nice box?
There is no such thing as a "universal box" that works well with all speaker drivers - SO - You need to look at the Theile - Small parameters for the woofer drivers you intend to use in your proposed enclosure. Get these parameters from the manufacturer. Download a copy of WinISD from the following site: www.linearteam.org/winisd.html
Install this on your PC. Enter the Theile Small paramters into WinISD and model the box / vent to maximize the bass response.
If you have any questions on how to do this drop me a PM - I'd be happy to help you.
Here's the box I built for my 68. Fits between the fender wells, and is secured with angle brackets at the top sides to the screws that hold the hinges for the window stroage tray(had to take that out)
Box is made from hi-density particle board, with separations between the woofer and mids/tweeters, is held together with Liquid Nails and deck screws, and covered with a roll of carpet from Kragens.
I could have made the box deeper, two woofers, different speaker arrangement, etc., but it does what I want it to do, and I can't hear it that well anyway with the exhaust
It does sound killer when parked with the tops off
flynhi : no baffles , or insulation , I did seal the box w/silicon before I covered it , sounds great even with the top down
tedH : no plans to sell the box , the dia is basically all you would need to build this yourself , carpet is available from autozone , mdf board avail at your local lumber store , I got the quick disconnnects from a local sound shop (so I can remove box ) , took me an afternoon to "glue & screw" , the box is pressure fit inbetween the two fender wells. I'm not sure how close the fit will be with t-tops because I've not had a chance to look at a coupe with the tops stored , but the size I have depicted is the max box size with the vert top stored , you might be able to increase this box size and get more volume for your box (if the t-tops will allow).
