ok i am out in the garage and plan on changing my fluid. how much can i expect to put back into the car? i have two 23 ounce bottles of axle lubricant and one 4oz bottle of posi additive. I plan on pumping out the original stuff then starting with the additive back in then the other bottles. Figure i will just pump back in until it comes out the hole....just wondering how much to expect to get in.
My 79 is supposed to hold 4 pints total, but when I pumped it out
I could only put approx. 3 pints back in so I suppose You cant get
every bit of the old stuff out. I used synthetic and no additive.
Royal Purple Max Gear.

Same with mine, drain what you can and fill it untill you can fill it any more.
I'm going to do the same thing and I have a leaky rear pinion seal so I need to go a bit deeper (remove the driveshaft). But if you're going to do it, why not take the cover off, replace the gasket and have a little look? That way, you're guaranteed to get all the old fluid out before adding new.
I guess for me, I wouldn't change my oil without changing the filter and this would be along the same lines. If you need new fluid and have any debris, etc. in it, its all going to remain if you don't change ALL of it
