I have a 77 that the cruise control does not work on.I know next to nothing about how they work, but my first thought was a fuse, but according to my manual the same fuse also works the gauges which operate fine.Any suggestions on what to check next????
Several years ago, I decided to tackle my cruise control. I actually managed to get it working but soon disconnected it. Mine is an 80, but I think they are very similar.
The biggest culprit with these cruise systems seems to be the vacuum system. Make sure all the vacuum hoses are connected.
I spent a lot of time and a good bit of money on getting it working, but in the end, it really sucked. Compared to the electronic ones of today, it did a very poor job of maintaining a constant cruise speed. The last straw though, was when it didn't disengage when I hit the brakes one time.
I like having CC, but I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket one and installing it.
Like noted, first check the vacuum lines. You said you checked the fuse. There is a vacuum breaker switch located at or above the brake light switch on the brake pedal arm. Mine was out of adjustment, so it was as if my brakes were always applied, and therefore the cruise wouldn't work. Readjusted the switch, and all was well. Also make sure the cable from the vacuum diaphram is hooked up and not broken or disconnected on one end or the other (or frozen). It could also be the switch in the cockpit. These can be a pain to troubleshoot but almost all the time it is either a vacuum issue, a brake switch issue, or a bad electrical connection. Good luck. That's the limit of my expertise in this area
I got mine working on my 79 and it works great but took a while. You need a service manual because it tells you how to test all factors like the switch on the turn signal, the transducer etc. I wound up having to change the transducer as well as switching two vacuum lines that had been reversed. Works like a charm now and holds steady, just had to adjust the orefice on the side because it was holding a little hi off the set speed. Let me know if you need the specific instructions, maybe I can copy them and fax them or mail em to you,

Mine was missing when the car got delivered. CnV was supposed to have fixed it before shipping the car. After I replaced the missing parts and checked the vacuum and electrics it works great.

Another CnV horror story, go figure. Their cars look great on the website but man I've heard some of some problems.
