I have an Edlebrock RPM Airgap under a stock LT-1 style hood. I am running a Holley 670 Street Avenger carb and a drop base air cleaner. I have less than a 1/4 inch clearance but have not touched the air cleaner to the hood through several hard launches.
AJROTHM Just go get a spare L88 hood and paint it racer flat black
L88 hoods look good from the outside I never did like the look out over
the hood.
I will probably end up with the L88 hood but I keep reading about all of the fitment issues and problems with the wiper door clearance etc. Not sure if a paint shop could paint it and have it match my car. I am not even sure what color my car really is.
I do like the way the L88 hood looks though. Ofcourse the paint on my hood is the only panel on the car with PERFECT paint, thats the panel I have to lose. LOL
Your car looks like the same color dark green as my 72 I bought it
used with 6500 miles on it and cant remember what the paint color
was called. Have you driven or rode in a car with the L88 hood??
I just rode in one for a while and did not like it.

No haven't driven or ridden in one. Looked through the windshield of one. Its pretty tall. My Dad's 59' has a cowl hood(circa. 69' camaro) on it and I have driven it but its not near as tall as an L88, not to mention when sitting in or on a 59', its like sitting up in a truck. LOL
Not sure what my green is but its NO WHERE near the Brands Hatch green that it came with from the factory, mine has more "green" and less "dark baby sh*t", not to mention lots more metallic.
I have driven cars with the LT1/bb hood and that is the way to go.
I think you can get the RPM air gap under one. It would not take
any major work to drop your engine and trans 1 inch if you felt you
needed to.
My opinion,..as far as the three years of 1973-1975.
GM spent a lot of time and effort on the fresh air hoods and cowl induction of 73-75. For every X degree reduction of intake temperature = increase of Y horsepower (can't remeber the formula but the gain will get your attention).
I wouldn't toss this formula or GM's R & D for an intake that requires another hood (and I assume paint) or dropping the engine and tranny an inch.
If weight is the issue, there's aluminum intakes that will fit,..the L-36 intake comes to mind or other stockers,..maybe some port work and go!

K&N 14 inch element will give you another 3/8 inch clearance....Will also set ya back about $40 though
The 71s dont have anything like the 73 up cars with air coming in off the windshield base. If you want to remove the windsheild wiper stuff you could change to
a 73 up hood. The old low rise intakes are nothing but junk for performace. GM
should have used some of its advanced technolgy no how and not used Stevie
Wonder and Ray Charles to weld the frame. What happened to the door gap
and fender gap fit of the C2s the C3s are very bad.
