Default Never Again!

10 hours to swap out the speedometer on my 73
I could have almost rebuilt the engine in the time that it took to get this dash apart...

And STILL... the trip cable (brand new) wont work correctly because of too much bend....

I would rather lay under the car covered in grease than play with this brittle, 33 year old, tightly installed interior...GRRRRR

Keep at it man. Nothing more to say really. We've all been there.

Have a beer. See if that helps.

They are selling new C6s just down the road from your house and
they will take trade ins. Did you make up any new cuss words??
You have it done now time for that mixed drink a good nights
sleep and the old vette will look much better tomorrow

sounds like you routed the trip cable under the support bar instead of over. puts a bad kink in it.

keep at it. you'll get it right. i've made that mistake myself atleast two or three times. taking the dash in and out gets easier the more you do it.

sounds like you are forgetting the key ingrediant when working on these cars....... Beer dash boards are a three beer slow sipping job for sure. every so often, take a step back, take a deep breath and a sip of beer. helps keep the frustration down.

good luck.

Mike.

sounds almost as much fun as working on a fuse panel... pull the seat out to get some room.. at least that way you aren't bent like a pretzel while standing on your head!

ya I changed my tach cable a couple weeks ago with gauge cluster in place.. Needless to say it was a BIATCH!! but I got it. The ONE thing skinny arms are good for. LOL Could barely freakin see the back of the tach, let alone get my hands in there.

That won't help. Try replacing the speedometer in the C6.

I bought an electric tach for my '68. I've done this before so I decided to group together some of my interior projects. Long story/short 2 MF'n months, and it didn't want to go back together. Beer !!!! I needed alot more then that, but it looks great now.

Jobs like this are good to back burner. Work on other things and work on this a little at a time. It's too frustrating a job to do all at once. Also a beer does help

The tach cable was a picnic compared to the speedo replacement
Wrapped my right hand around the cable. push the clip in with my thumb and pull the cable out..5 minutes

You probably kink the trip odometer cable when installing it. To get it to work there is only one way to install the cable - it must go over a steel brace if it goes under it it will kink.

The dash removal is a pain - for me because of the wire harness attached to the back of the instruments. When I put it back I left the wire harness detached from the clip on the speedometer back. Last time I pull the panel out it took 15 minutes.

I'm 53 w/a less than mobile lower back also, but I have a 23 year old son that is willing to do the twisting type work for me.

No Kink, I just decided not to screw it into the bracket which holds secure just under the dash for now... so, it does work, it just takes 2 hands to reset it.

As far as the steel brace goes, Im not exactly sure what brace were talking about
Ill take a look in a day or so when I can crouch down again

How much to rent the 23 year old
Honestly... the back thing is no fun
Thanks for the replys

I took my dash out so many times last summer that I ended up making bulk connectors for all the bulbs in the back of the dash. Rather than making twenty-something connections each time I pulled the dash, I now only need to make two.

BTW - That is a crummy job, but IMHO pulling a manual transmission and putting it back is probably equal to it in the PITA factor, especially if you don't have a lift.

This thread actually reminds me that I need to replace my speedo cable sometime too!
