I pulled into the driveway last night and the car just did not feel right. I grabbed the timing light and the timing was dead on. Then I heard a ticking sound, and as I looked around for it, I saw bright blue flashes coming from the area of the #3 plug. I shut her down, figuring a spark plug wire had come off (It was dark and I was working under a street light so I could not see). I got a flashlight and saw the plug wire still attached. I checked it and it was not loose, so I cranked her back up, and looked again.
There were sparks running all along the outside of the spark plug's insulator between the plug wire boot and the block!
I pulled the plug and it looks okay (Autolite platinum with about 1k miles). I have an '81 with stock ignition plus a high voltage coil, MSD 6a and Hypertech chip. All components (distributor, coil, cap, rotor, module, wires, plugs) are fairly new and in good condition. Any ideas what would cause the arcing I described? Thanks and God bless, Sensei
sometimes the plug will get a hair line crack in the porcelain if the socket is not on right during tightening, try a new plug, I've had this happen before.
