Default Electric Fuel pump/return line

I have been running my motor w/a cheap electric pump for about 2 years now. It was a quick fix when my mechanical pump died near the parts store. I had it running threw the mechanical pump, and everything was working fine.,

I have been cleaning up a lot of loose ends under the hood, so I pulled the mech. pump and installed a block off plate in its place. The problem I have now is that my car idles in excess of 2000RPM. I am guessing I need one of two things. A return line to the tank(elec. pump has no spot for it) or a pressure regulator. Or maybe both? Would I be better off going back to a mechanical pump? or can I customize this pump to work. It is feeding a holley 750 DP. I want to take the car for a drive really bad and would like to get it sorted out tonight

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, you should be running a fuel pressure regulator with an electric pump.

Some pumps don't require a regulator. The low pressure holley pump for example, or a carter or the dupree. Electric pumps are also pushers, not good at sucking. You should have the pump mounted close to the tank and push the fuel forward, not sucking like you are doing.
The idle change is funny?? If the pump was really over pressure you would get flooding not an increase in idle. Adding overrich fuel would not account for the sudden increased idle speed.
You would just flood out the motor.
Also the drag of the pump shouldn't have been that great that it accounts for the 2000 idle speed.

when it starts, it fires up instantly at about 1000RPM and over the next 1 or 2 seconds it climbs to 2000... adjusting either of the screws on the carb does nothing.... the only other option I can see is that the base gasket popped. I know it can cause a bad idle on a throttle body but am not sure about a carb. The only other difference between good idle and bad is that I am running open headers at the moment... I am confused

If I stick with the electric I will move it closer to the tank as per your suggestion

i'd put the mechanical pump back on. but you still might have the high idle if there is something wrong with the carb. i put one of those low pressure pumps that norval mentioned on a 396 that had an old edelbrock on it and gas started seeping out of all of the gaskets.
