Default '69 steering column/ wheel question

Ok, I went to install my new steering wheel today (from Grant) and i'm having an issue.
After removing the old wheel, per the instructions I am trying to install the adapter. The problem is, in order for the adapter to fit over the post that the horn button connects to means that the new wheel will be like 60 degrees from straight up and down. I could understand if the old one was like this, but the old wheel was straight.
Here are a few pics to illustrate what I am talking about:

This is the column with the tires pointed straight ahead

and this is the adapter in the "top up" position

Notice that the hole for the horn should be at the 2 o'clock position rather than the 10 o'clock.

Any ideas why the old wheel was straight, but the new one would be crooked?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

The installation kit should have come with a wire lead, that will go from the existing plunger, (which is removed), and then wraps around steering post to the 2 o'clock position, and enters the hub. This allows the Grant wheel to install on a vette column.

See this picture:

Insert wire lead (supplied in kit) through plastic sleeve. Notice one and will not pass through sleeve, this bell shaped end will go into the horn contact housing. Insert sleeve and wire into housing and lock into position.

.TO ENSURE WHEEL IS STRAIGHT. Route wire around hub, as shown above, from the 10 o'clock position to about the 2 o'clock position to properly align wheel. Position post cover and wheel on hub, making sure wire lead passes through the appropriate holes in the 2 o'clock position. Using the three shoulder bolts provided, fasten the hub, post cover and wheel together, but do not tighten.

So I need to remove the shaft lock so I can remove the existing plunger?

You need to remove the plunger only, if you look closely as you push in on the plunger, a small plastic retaining ring holds it in along with the spring, if you gently twist it, with a sharp awl, it will turn and pop out, it is held in with a small tab sticking out that fits in a groove. Once this is out, the wheel should have come with a wire kit, that will go into the tube, in place of the plunger, then the wire will go around the column shaft, and into the hub at the 2 oclock position.

Ah, now I get it. Thanks for the info!
Unfortuneatly, I made the mistake of looking too close at the rest of the column and now I am in the market for a new turn signal switch. Also, the hazard button is missing!
1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Thanks again for the help,
Scott
