Default '76 will not downshift into 2nd

My wife came home and said her '76 will not downshift into 2nd from 3rd or 4th. It upshifts fine, but when coming down from 3rd, she has to wait for the rpms to get low enough to go into 1st.

What could be the trouble?

I'm thinking of two things: (1) just an adjustment on the shift lever or (2) the 1st/2nd synchronizer sleeve in the trany. Any ideas?

Thanks

When downshifting from third to second ....push the clutch in, take it out of third, (now your in neutral) let the clutch out wind the rpm up a bit, let off the gas, push the clutch back in and see if you can get it into second (This is all done in a matter of a second or so)...this is called double clutching
If it goes right into second then I would think syncro.

Believe it or not, this is even discussed in my 1973 owners manual.

It might take a few times to get the hang of it ... you can practice with 4th to 3rd or from 2nd to 1st to start off so you know you have done it right.

Heres a link if I diddnt explain it well enough http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-double-clutching.htm

I drove big trucks for 20 years and they are not synchronized so its necessary.. it's harder to explain than it is to do
