My body mounts are in bad shape. I'm trying to get an idea of what it will take to repair the #3 mounts. I've gathered as many drawings and photos as I could find. I'm a little unclear on the construction of the birdcage and body. From what i gather, the body is attached to the steel bird cage (riveted?). The bird cage is mounted on the frame rails by the rubber mounts. Is this correct? The bird cage has a steel channel that sits on top of the #2 and #3 mounts? I think this is where I have some rust that needs repair. The body is lower on one side and small crack has started. The other side is much better. Here is a photo looking up between the body and frame: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/banks....nm=158ascd.jpg
Is this a rotted section of the bird cage? Can a section of the body be cut out for access to repair this? My vette is not much to look at and someday the body will have to come off. At this point, I'm looking for a way to fix this without taking the body off. Any comments are appreciated.
If the body of my vette looked like yours, I would be more enthtusiastic about doing a body off.
Do you think a section of the body could be removed to access the rotted part of the rocker and patch it?
Hi, yes that is a rusted out rocker channel. nice picture. I just took the body off the frame to fix the same problem. My #2 and # 3 and #4 mounts on both sides are totally rusted out. Now I just have to figure out how to fix it. The #3 mount seems easier than the # 2. Cutting and patching the body seems harder than lifting the body to make the repair.
Thanks for the replies. Taking the body off is definately the way to go. Any more comments out there? I'm still considering removing a section of the body to repair the bad section of rocker channel. Just gathering info to make the best decision. Has anyone done this type of repair with body on?
Just got my rocker replacement parts from Zip today. Unboxed everything and i'm impressed with the quality so far. Good welds, nice workmanship, these will definately repair the rocker channels right
This pic. might give you an idea. This is with the body off but you should be able to do it with the body on. The problem you might run in too is rust on the frame. It would be a lot less hastle to repair both with the body off.
