C4 suspension into C3: Halfshaft question
I posted a question in the C4 section but no definitive answers yet, so I thought I would consult the wisdom of the C3 group. I picked up an extra pair of C4 halfshafts off ebay this week but there's an odd item about them. There is a very small hex drive screw (similar in appearance to a set screw) in the shaft about three inches from the yoke weld on each halfshaft. I've never seen these on C4 shafts before, and the only function I can possibly conceive of is an access port to allow shielding gas backflow during the manufacturing welding process. But, if so, why haven't I seen or noticed this before? I'm somewhat baffled by this, and any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
I have never seen a hex set screw on any of them, maybe someonre used it for balancing? Are the set screws in exactly the same location on both shafts?
Can you tell me the length of those halfshafts I want to use some C4 ones also but if theyr'e too long I may get soem from dennys instead.

I just checked the C4 forum and got a very knowledgable answer. There was a TSB back in '84 regarding "clinking" noises in the drive shaft and halfshafts. Apparently, if I understand it correctly, the cure was to drill a small hole in the shaft and spray in some oil to seep into the spaces between the yoke and shaft to quiet the noise as the shaft twists or bends slightly. Not a comforting scenario, but apparently it worked (and I ended up buying a pair exhibiting that problem).
These shafts are 18 1/8 inches between the u-joint centerlines.
