Do I place axle stands under each side of the frame towards the front in line with the front crossmember, the widest part of the frame? or do I place nearer the front?
Have been told its ok To jack and support at the widest point and also upfront of the engine at narrowest part...
info for n00b please. Need to get this sorted before UK nationals.
I don't know if this is the preferred method but I jack the car in the center of the front crossmember and place jack stands in front each door at the frame before it starts to turn toward the engine. I place 2 X 6 pieces of wood on the jack for a softer piece between the jack and the metal. I have never had any problems with this method. I jack the rear by jacking the diff and placing stands just in front of the rear wheels where the frame has those big braces. I hope this helps!

I jack up the frame on the side in the middle..right in front of the crossmember(the crossmember where the exhaust pipes go through. I put the jack stands at the furthest point away from the jack before the frame curves.
Some people jack up front and back...I do it one side at a time that way I can jack up the car using the frame rather than the front cross member or differencial.
