I have Flowmaster 40s on my 71, there is little resonance and they sound good at idle and really good going down the road but I have a stock motor with headers. We put 2 chamber flowmasters(40s) on all of my dad's cars, he is 54 yrs old and will run nothing other then flowmasters.
I do have a borla catback on my TA and the quality is second to none. But my borla has a cutout built into it and I run it open all the time. Sometimes I close it and force all the exhaust through the muffler, the muffler is very quiet and toned, has a nice sound at half to full throttle but is WAY too quiet at idle and loafing around town.
Now flowmaster is releasing the original square 2 chambers out again in black like the first sets that came out in the 80s. I will be putting them on the 70 SS nova we are building. Flowmasters are not the best for HP but are definetly the best for sound.
It depends. There are different kinds of Borlas and different kinds of Dynomax mufflers. The Dynomax bullets sound cooler than any other under the car muffler that I've heard, but it makes sense since they might as well be hollow pipes. The Dynomax Super Turbos sound awesome. My buddy has them on his 75 SB and I can hear him drive up from inside my house, sounds like a BB. And there is very little interior resonance. Magnaflows are ok, they sound kinda dirty by comparison, kinda like flowmasters but less of a hollow sound. And Borlas, are well Borlas. I've never heard a Borla sound bad. They can make even a 4cyl sound good.
All true. The traditional glasspacks had a rappy kind of sound and a lot of noise when you lifted off the throttle. My Ultraflows have none of that. The only time they get rappy is at WOT and when you lift off there is no popping or other noise. I think the biggest reason for this is their location. I will reiterate that they get louder once broken in. I was a little disappointed when I first installed them. They were quieter than my stock mufflers at idle and didn't sound like much unless you were 3/4 into the throttle. Now, after about 1000 miles or so they sound like I thought they should at the beginning. The thing I like most about mine is the polished stainless shell which I know will last until I either get tired of them or I switch to driving a cloud.
Where did you get your SS ultraflows?
Did they get louder over time because the glass packing slowly disintegrated (I thought I read that somewhere)? Do they continue to get louder and louder over time?
