My '75, ZZ4 crate engine, with the original TH400 transmission acts terribly at WOT. From a standstill and then laying on the gas to WOT, it will accelerate hard until changing to 2nd and then it will almost pause, surge and then change gears. It's a terribly rough shift and once when I was laying on it, my Vette actually choked out and died. I want to believe the shift took took long, the secondaries poured too much gas in, and choked out the engine.
If I just drive casually the car has no problems at all. The shifts are as gentle as ever and I have no problems. I only have problems at WOT.
So, what do you think? Is it the transmission? What else might it be?
Getting sketchy there, but IMO, i'ts a carb thing with the engine...not the tranny, say is you get on it maybe 3/4 throttle, NOT WOT....what happens?? if it does it's thing at decent power it's not the tranny...
check fluid levels/color and if possible, temps....don't sound like any 400 I know in MY history...not built decent anyway...

I will give it a try at 3/4 throttle and see. I believe it will just do the same thing with shifting hard (as in a 1/2 second pause for the shift and then roughly gets in gear.)
I never thought much of the carb because less than a year ago, Lars came to Northern Virginia and tuned it.
It sounds like the carb. may be running out of fuel. Check the fuel filter, sending unit/pick-up sock-filter for obstruction. Also check for pinched fuel line at the fuel pump.
