Found affordable mech.tach drive HEI distributor, single wire hook up, but where do you pick up 12 volt supply? I was told old points type coil power wire was run thru resistor and had less than 12 volts. Is that right??
Yes--There should be 2 wires a pink and a green going to your backup light switch on your trans. ---pick 12 volts there it comes out of firewall with the tach cable.

72,
The only dumb questions on this Forum would start like....."Can I paint my car Toyota beige......?" or something like that. LOL.
I have a '74 that was fitted with a '75 engine when I bought it, so it had a non-tach drive HEI. Sometime later, I was able to buy a tach drive HEI and it works well, Trouble is, that in order to get the tach cable to come out at the desired "9 o'clock" position (viewed from BEHIND engine) you have to twist the dissy so that the "box" that the wires go into hits the air cleaner .
Luckily, mine had an el cheapo a.c. so I just notched it in the appropriate area for fitment. If you have an original a.c., you might consider replacing it with a cheapie, but of course keep the original somewhere safe.
on my 74 the resistor wire was black with a pink stripe and said Resistor on it i think it even said "do not cut". so i cut it... no, i followed it back to the block, removed it with needle nose and then ran a new wire in its place to the same connection.
