What should the Exhaust Gas Temperature be? Engine is relatively stock. I checked it with a laser temperature gage at the header and came up with about 630 degrees.
Exhaust gas temperature is in the 12-1300 range and a laser temperature gage can't read the actual gas temperature.
It can be used to check cylinder by cylinder to see if every one is firing the same.
And they're usually measured on a dyno with the engine under a load. Reading EGTs at idle tells you nothing other than whether the cylinder is firing or not.
The heat gun you're using probably wouldn't indicate any varience in exhaust gas temperatures, they have a hard time reading on bare, stainless or coated pipe. They work fairly well on painted surfaces.
So you may see a difference, but that's only the surface temperature of the painted header pipe. If you want to see the exhaust gas temperature profile, you'd need to install individual exhaust gas pyrometers in each runner. By the way, that's something you'll see at good engine or tuner shops.
Individual pyrometers working with a good AF ratio analyzer and a MAF sensor are crucial in getting the last HP out of your engine.
Since I posted this morning I adjusted the idle mixture screws and reduced the temp readings to around 350 - 400 degrees. The carb had never been adjusted. It was running extremely lean.
