Default Cam question - 68

Curious if anyone has info on the numbers of an original cam for a 68? I just had my 327HP rebuilt and would like to make sure I get a good combo of cam and carb. The cam they gave me has a ratio of int/exh of 368/398. I can get a 435/460 for $135. I plan to use a Holley 650cfm mech w/ elect choke. I want a sporty engine with good lowend power.

I want to take those 5.0's and civics off the line!

Thanks!

Is there a simple explanation for what the numbers mean?

My current cam:

lift 368
exhaust 398
duration intake 184/194
duration exhaust 258/268

I want to make sure I have 350hp(+)
Thanks!

That looks like the SMALLEST hydraulic flat tappet cam that Speed Pro markets P/N CS1149R ... their specs 0.050 dur 184*I/194*E ... SAE dur 258*I/268*E ... valve lift .368"I/.398"E ... overlap 47*... has a published power range 1000-3500rpm with "stock" idle. You'll be darned lucky to find 200HP with that! That's even less cam than a stock L48 motor has ... considerably less than a stock L82 has.
-edit- also same as Melling P/N 229-2199 ... also smallest Melling markets.

Default Need much more info for reliable cam recommendation

Also ... to make a cam recommendation ... anyone who might offer any reliable help will need to know a lot about your REBUILT 327.

What heads? What valve sizes? What pistons? Has block been decked? What is compression ratio? What is your rear gear ratio? What trans? auto & does it have stock stall torque convertor or 3spd man or 4spd man?
-edit- Speed-Pro makes a replacement cam for 327 w/350 horsepower replaces GM P/N 3863151 ... it is SP P/N CS179R ... specs: 0.050" dur 222*I/222*E ... SAE dur 290*I/290*E ... valve lift .447"I/.447"E ... overlap 78*... has a published power range 2200-5200rpm with "good" idle. Melling's equivalent is P/N 229-1713. That is WAY more cam than that POS the builder handed you.

not sure on all parts yet

it's to be a 327HP / 350hp engine, but is not #'s match for the 68, but correct engine for car, so I've been told, I have not verified this yet, can anyone here??? thanks!

4 bolt main
been bored .060
correct dbl heads
4spd muncie 20... I think

engine #'s
block: 25GM 3970010
date codes (?): 1 C120 TDN

there were many other letters and numbers on the block as well...?

head #'s (for 1, the other is currently masked for painting)
GM7 3782461 F95 13

Edellbrock TorquerII intake

OK ... we know you have the wrong cam. We also understand you have 461 heads (probably reads 3782461) ... they have about 62cc chambers when new.

Do you have a head off motor so that you can look at piston type & measure how far down in hole it is? And can measure diameter of both an intake & an exhaust valve?

Has the block been decked / milled? ... those flat surfaces that the heads lays on?

Have the 461 heads been surfaced / milled ... those flat surfaces that lay on the block?

The builder should be able to tell if anything has been milled/decked/sufaced ...and HOW MUCH was taken off?

Can the builder tell us piston manufacturer & what their part number is? Are they flattops or domed popups? ... how many valve reliefs if any?

With all that info, we can calculate rather closely what the compression ratio is NOW. Once CR is known, a much better evaluation is possible.
