Is having 1/16" clearance to a exhaust pipe a problem? If that was my MAIN reason, I wouldn't go to the trouble. But, headers are cool.

I agree with that.

Headers may give you more clearance with the idler arm, but you are looking at potential plug issues and some exhaust mods or a new exhaust system.

Don't get me wrong, I love headers!

I also had to go to shorty plugs after installing my hooker headers.

My Hedman Elite's fit perfectly out of the box SB 4 speed with Dart heads straight plugs.

Nice headers

My car came to me with rusted out header collectors. I could not identify the brand, so I replaced them with Hooker Comp. Originally I had no clearance issues, but with a heavy duty idler arm, I found I had to flat spot the tube for a good install and fit. I have no plug issues, first small-block I haven't had plug issues with!
I'm now in the process of replacing the rest of the exhaust, which is becoming a major PITA. I've got the mufflers, hangers and tips, but most guys want $450-750 to bend the pipes! Before I spend that kind of money on a few hours of labor I will go to side-pipes.
Then of course I'll have to upgrade the heads to match the better flow, and play with the intake, and rethink the gearing, and...............

I just put on Dynomax headers and mufflers and 2.5 in pipes with ZERO problems. This is on my '74 automatic. Sounds great. I'll post a pic later.

I have Heddman on my 74 small block with no clearance problems at all. I got them coated to help with heat. I use standard plugs with no problems....

Depends on whether you are asking or my wife is asking

This is a good excuse to put headers on, since I have been wanting to for a couple of years.

I personally like the $86 headers that Summit sells under their name.
