I live in Minnesota and I'm 17. So it would be hard to get down there to try it. What is the horsepower rating on it? What would I need to stick it were my th350 is?
Dang ur 17? i thot i was the youngest guy here and im 18.
I don't need any of that stuff. I am planning on converting my '68 Chevy van from a Saginaw 3 speed to a 4 speed (on the tree).A wide ratio M20 will do the trick.
JustinD, I just finished a TH400-to-Muncie M20 swap on my '70 in April. I tried to do it as cheaply as possible AND as quickly as possible; which is to say because of time considerations I had to pay more for some items than I otherwise might have. If you can live with a muncie 4-speed that would be the simplest swap as you can use parts that were originally designed for your vette and you wouldn't really be 'modifying' anything. I you just gotta have extra gears, the Keistler kit is really the Cadillac of those for close to $4000. After I was finished with mine I had spent $1800, but I had to pull the trans back out and throw a rebuild kit at it ($230) and then two days after that the ebay junk Z Bar broke-$90 to replace that. If you'd like, I have a complete itemized list of every last nut and bolt used in the swap, where it all came from, and what it cost. PS I might be interested in your TH350 slip yoke and I have a very nice TH400 yoke......
I had the M21 behind my 454 it stood up to it. it had a lot more torque
and HP the 425 I did not drag race it. Find a good trans from late
70s vette or camaro.
I will give it a go you will need, trans, shifter, bellhousing, clutch fork,
flywheel, clutch, Z- bar, ball stud for Z-bar. clutch rod for clutch fork,
different clutch and brake pedals. this is a good start
Might as well go with the overdrive right off the bat....Get a T5 out of a Mustang or Camaro. I have one sitting on the bench waiting until winter to through into the car.
justind, i would recommend that you work with the stuff you have.
to put a manual trans. in your car is not that difficult if you have the right tools, equipment and space to work. You have to work out the problems with floor mods., welding in a bracket for the clutch pivot, possible x-member mods. The real problem will be trying to dial in the new bell housing with the engine in the car (unless you want to pull it).
A great project for a young guy if you had a project mentor there to help you. On your own and getting help from this site it may be too difficult for members to accurately convey useful tips.
just a suggestion.
