I'm going to change the oil in my car this weekend, and I was wondering if anyone here knows whats the best synthetic oil I should use for my 76'. I was wondering if that Q advanced stuff was good? Any thoughts?
You can see how Quaker State's synthetic stacks up to others in this AMSOIL commissioned comparison: Comparative Motor Oil Test
I run Amsoil in my Silverado. 25k between changes & the oil is not degraded. After the Vette's new engine is broke in it will also get the Amsoil. Dual filters & oil analysis = 100K. They don't change turbine oil except at overhaul time.
I have a friend that does oil degradation testing. Amsoil tested better at 10,000 miles than any dino oil new. All the molecules are the same size. The dyno oils have small and large molecules. Think of oil as small ball bearings. If they are all the same size it will slide easier, load more evenly and protect from damage better than assorted size ball bearings. The downside is they are small so a oil leak that has large dino molecules clogging the leak will wash out and could have a leak form that wasn't there with the dyno oil. For protection synthetic is definetly better. Use an Amsoil filter and change it every 3,000 or every year whichever comes first and your engine will last.
Would the internals be subjected to combustion blow-by contaminates and the scrapings of cast iron rings and cylinders? There is a lot of nasty stuff in internal combustion oil that just doesn't get in the sealed turbine engine. I say use a good oil and change it often. Very often.
I've always used 10W40 Pennzoil in my '91 Nissan truck. To this day, it still runs fine even though it's got 304,000 miles and doesn't use a drop of oil. Not one drop.
I use 5W30 Mobil One in my '90 Corvette and it doesn't use any oil either. I change the oil every 4,000 miles in both vehicles.
Someday, I'll have a C3. I'll try to use whatever oil the previous owner was using.
Why change to synthetic oil for a 76 motor? If you go to the "Search on this thread and type in (Motor oil) you will find out alot of info on the types of motor oil and the advantages of each. Don't think older motors "need" the synthetic oil so why not save $. Additionally you may find that synthetic motor oil will more quickly leak past older or worn seals. IMHO a good 10W-30 along with regular oil and filter changes is fully consistant with the design/requirements of older motors. The $ you will save over the higher cost of synthetic oil you can apply to more frequent oil changes with conventional oil which after all is the best way to extend the life of your motor.
