If the rules will let you get away with them use the Vortec heads from GM, they run the same price but will out perform any other production style head. They out flow the bowtie heads. They have better combustion characteristics, they should provide about 20-30hp more than the LT1 style head.
If your intention is to race in one of the organized "factory stock" races that are becoming popular, I would suggest that you check with those in charge of these events FIRST. Some of these events require that you run parts with the same casting numbers as those originally installed; if that is the case, heads currently available from GM will NOT be legal. Other events allow you to use different castings when the original was superceded... You get my point. You can spend a lot of money and effort trying to get a "correct" engine together only to find out that it fails tech at the event you want to race at.
Also remember that the 1970 LT-1 heads differed from the 1971-72 LT-1 heads. The 3991492 head that Tom was kind enough to post a link to is a service replacement for the 1969-70 3927186 head. The heads originally installed on 1971-72 LT-1s was 3973487 (also 3973487X in 1972). Depending upon the rules, you'll either need to find a set of these heads or their approved equivalant.
Good luck with your project!
Regards,
I've got good news and bad news for you. First, the good news: the cylinder heads which you seek are still available from GM. The current SERVICE PART number for these heads is GM #464045. I'm not sure if these heads carry the original casting number for 71-72 LT-1s, but I believe that they do. In any event, they are the GM SERVICE replacement heads for the application you seek.
Now, the bad news. These cylinder heads carry a current GM list price of $403.69/EACH and that is a BARE price; just the cylinder heads, rocker studs and guide plates. All other parts have to be purchased seperately. To my knowledge, these heads are not now nor have they ever been available from GM as complete assemblies ready to bolt on.
Now more bad news: I believe that these heads are scheduled for discontinuation when GM wherehouse stock is exhausted, if they have not already been so-discontinued. I'm not sure of this, but I'm "pretty sure". So, if you want some, I'd suggest acting quickly.
Yes, these heads are the earlier style LT-1 heads (1970-only). Other than combustion chamber size and the fact that they don't have induction-hardened exhaust valve seats, they are basically the same as the 71-72 LT-1 heads.
These particular heads, GM #12480092, GM list for $410.00/each, but S-D is selling them for about 25% off list. They would probably offer about the same deal on the GM # 464045 heads, too. However, both of these heads are sold BARE and that is the price shown. S-D will sell the complete heads, but that is as done in their machine shop, not as-supplied by GM.
Usually when I provide a price in my posts, it's a GM list price. Of course, GM parts can often be purchased at a discount, but there are so many "variations" of that, I usually just provide the GM list price as a "point of reference" since that is the only "standardized" published price.

I was mistaken on the price of $500. These have gone up a bit since I was looking for heads a while back, but the actual price is now $330.05 for each head from Pace Chevrolet. It is still a pretty good deal. You should be able to shop around to get a better price. Everything is there except for the guide plates and screw in studs.

Yes, that is the one that I thought about immediately and why I suggested that you know the rules before committing money to parts. The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race held at the Mid Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, MI is probably the premier event for this type of racing. They WILL check casting numbers to ensure that they are correct for the model year and engine option claimed.
For those of you not familiar with this event, check it out... You'll get a chance to see some fantastic cars run!
