Found It!!!
Started trying some of the groups ideas...It turns out the previous owner, a well-meaning dude named Bubba (who gave me a lot of extra parts so I'm really not complaining), had used a red colored cable on the negative battery post, and a black cable on the positive post. Naturally, I clipped the test light to the black cable and then started probing. So... all along I really had the test light on the positive battery terminal which showed the frame as hot. I also found the compartment light problem: the driver door switch or wires. I disconnected the wires from the switch and the light goes on and off fine using the passenger door.
