I heard an ungodly squeeling noise under the hood and first thought the alternator had packed it in. Have found that the drive belt for what appears [/B]to be the power steering, is loose and this is where the noise is coming from. I can see and adjustment for the belt on the alternator and for the airconditioning but not for the power steering. If it is the power steering there should be a bracket on the pump but I just can't see it. For advice please.
Every year seems to be different, and there are different belt configurations depending on your options. On my 68 the p/s pump belt is tightened by moving the p/s pump itself. There are 2 bolts at the back of the pump that need to be loosened. One bolt is a pivot and the other bolt goes through a slot in a bracket - that's where the adjustment/belt tightening takes place. These 2 bolts are pretty tricky to get to. I could barely get to one of them from the top around my headers. Easier to get them both from underneath.
There is also a 3rd bolt that goes through the front of the p/s pump. In the last month three forum members (including me) have lost this front bolt with varying results. Make sure you still have that 3rd bolt in the front of the p/s pump. When I lost mine it just threw the p/s pump out of alignment and caused a lot of extra pump and belt noise. With the other guys more damage was caused. I have a pic of the new bolt in the front of the p/s pump. It is just about impossible to get in there!
