Looking at a new 770 Holley Street Avenger w/vac. seconds to replace my Holley 4150 750 w/ mech. seconds. How do you guys like this carb and have you been pleased with it? I'm not sure I want to waste time rebuilding my 750 again, so I'm thinking -out with the old and in with the new. Motor is a 406 with a fairly mild cam-.490 lift, 112 lobe center, 228 duration int/exh. Thanks for the help
I would stick with the 750 DP myself and put in a bigger cam. That is a very mild cam for a 406. If it is an every day street driver maybe but for a weekend car I would stick with the 750. I am running an 825 Mighty Demon on my 385 and it is just about right.
I have a 750 DP on my SB with a milled off choke horn. It has a Comp Cams 294S cam, Brodix -8 Pro heads (2.055 intakes), a Victor Jr Intake (milled down carb mount for hood cleance with an insulator), and 10.67:1 CR. It makes great power but I occationally bog the engine when not totally focused on my throttle work.
If I were doing it again, I think I'd go with a 750 with vacuum secondaries and mill the choke horn off. There is no chance of bogging with the vacuum secondary carb and I think overall throttle response would be better.
If you like the newer Street Avenger Series, it should be OK if you can either use the stock drop base air cleaner or have a raised hood where clearance isn't an issue.
painterman- thanks for the heads up. I'm going to stick with the 750 I've got. It's running better now that I lowered the fuel level in the bowls. Thanks for the opinion.
Gordonm- Your right, I went with a small cam to make sure I'd have enough vacuume, on a daily driver thought that was right-wrong. Now i've got a winter project, Thanks.
StickShiftCorvette- I too think vac.seconds would be good. I'm bound and determand to make this carb work. I use a performer intake (stock '69 hood), Dart pro-one alum. heads (2.02/1.60), I need a bigger cam I guess. I'll bet your car hauls. Thanks for the ideas
