I saw this vendor at the Concorso Italiano in Carmel Valley. They had a nice selection of headlights and bulbs, plus they were very friendly and helpful. I didn't buy anything from them, even though they had a show discount, because I was already spending a bit for the weekends events. I'd really like to upgrade my lights one day soon.
Due to the fact, that sealed beams are not street-legal here in Germany, all Vettes are equiped with standard Hella headlights and separate halogene bulbs.
I'll take a look on the part-number of these headlights, because I'm sure, you'll get them in the states too.
I have a set of Hella H-4's on my '71. They are not legal in the U.S.
You also need to enlarge the opening in the rear of the bucket where the wire comes through - like with a 2" holesaw. Also, the dust cap dosent fit on the back of the lamp housing (you would need to open the back really big for that to fit too).
I used high temp RTV in place of the cap where the bulb clips in.
If you are willing to cut the bucket to gain clearance, they look great installed.
Both the low beam & high beam lenes are totally flat. The low beam lens extends out about 1/2". These lights look the they were designed for a shark. Here is a link to buy them. I'll try to find a better photo of them. http://www.rapidparts.com/Pages/vwc023p.html
H4 is just the code for the type of bub! They also have an E1 (europa) logo.
Some vette fendors sell them at rediculous prices but they were on some type of old Honda (accord??) look around there, much cheaper!
I have them too, they even come w/ dimmed light bulbs, you can hook those to the 1st position on your ****. (on the rear lights, they burn in the 1st pos)
Here is another link (pdf).
They are listed in the aux lamps part of the catalog.
Part # for hi-beams: 1053 (146mm)
Part # for low-beams: 5611 (146mm)
These are what I have. If you look at the photos, you can see that flat lenshttp://hella2.co.nz/catalogue_2001/11-22.pdf
I have the Hella H4 upgrade kit. It is not DOT approved but I haven't gotten pulled over yet ;) It was a direct bolt in to my '76, no RTV or cutting necessary, just plug it in. It's basically a housing that is physical identical to a sealed beam. The H4 socket is the same as the sealed beam socket as well. I just upgraded to 90w/100w lights and DANG is it bright. The H4 upgrade was one of the best mods I've done on my car, and I've done quite a few. I bought the kit which consists of the housing, light and documentation. You can save money if you buy the housing alone and get the bulb elsewhere. (Documentation is NOT needed). Call or check Hella's website for details on the parts. I think I paid a total of $45 or so for both kits (it was a long time ago, so I could be wrong), buying bulk is about half that.
There is another company that makes these, and I believe they are higher quality. The company is Cibie, they are more expensive, and I don't know anything else about them.
One really cool thing about this upgrade is if you get $450 to blow, you can buy HID lights which bolt into the H4 housings. How cool would that be.
The low beam lights are listed as Low/High beam lights, and they use an H4 bulb. The H4 bulbs have two filaments, and they rate them in watts....something like 55/100W. The 55W filament is on when you're using the low beams, and the 100W filament is on when you're using the high beams. You also have the High beam lamp, which uses a single filament H1 bulb that only comes on when using the high beams. (at least this is how I understand this to work......please correct me if I'm wrong).
oh, ok, A headlight went out the other day and ive been putting off replacing it. Good thing i saw this thread first! Is this a good place to buy the lights from? Should I get both low and hi beams at the same time?
If you want to spread out the cost, just start with the low beams (which work in both high and low). You may find that it is sufficient, but if your like me, I couldn't stop there :smash: :D .
They are great, and in the 20 years I've had 'em in the BOSS, I have never been questioned about them.
Last spring I bought a conversion set for my '81. There were a couple of small metal tabs on the back of the housing that had to be cut off with a hack saw, afterwards they fit real snug.
The e-mail of the person selling them was:
