The power piston gets some oxide buildup around it and it doesn't want to come out. But, you don't "need" to remove the power piston just to remove the float. I assume you are just removing the gasket and the gasket is still hooked on the power piston...I'm also assuming that you are going to replace the gasket with a new one...right? Just leave the piston in there and slip the gasket away from it.
Or, is the part you are trying to get out the needle valve? Is the float sitting on top of it? If so, then there is a rod which slides through loops in the float which needs to be removed. A picture of what you are working on would help.

Rock n Roll you have to remove the power piston before you can remove the plastic filler block that is over the float.
