Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice on removing trailing arms and bushings on my 81. Did a search and got lots of advice and warnings. All were true and great help! Got one out today and ready to put back. This job will make you talk ugly. The man who invented the sawsall should be rich!!
Well I changed all the front control arm bushings. A month later I was forced to change the trailing arm bushings cause I could not get a proper alignment.
Trailing arm was a joke compared to those front bastards...
This was the least of my problems, when I finally tried to do the alignment, I still couldn't get a good drive, I drove it back 4 times to the garage and they couldn't figure out why things were moving, everything seemed solid....except for the lower control arm bracket that is welded to the top of the cross member. This was completely broke off the cross member (well one side of the bracket) This was a long time breaking, the car has never handled this well in 6 years.
Mine wanted to take a right when letting off a strong acceleration. Was kind of like a ride at the fair. There was no rubber left on the right side, but it was far from falling out!! Glad you got yours fixed, I hope I don't have to attack the front end. I look at it like Bernie said, at least I won't have to do it for 25 or 30 more years. I can say I have done it! Was actually proud of myself, I didn't even show out, I just took my time..I think my next project might be the brakes.. I can also say, with the help of the forum, you know what you are getting into. Even a beginner can get a chance to learn with all the help! Corvettes are like any other cars, if you just try most of the car is strait forward!
If your front A-arm bushings were never done, they likely need a good refurbish, change the bushings, paint them, change the Ball joints, ...world of difference.
Brakes, just a joke, I had to change the master though...
