I need to see if anyone can help me pin point this noise to exactly what it could be...
During idle, the engine idles fine, however, every now and then it will make a tapping (or even a knock) sound like a bent push rod, its intermittent though, it's like "tap.........tap..tap....tap............ ..............tap......tap"
then if you slightly press the gas, it will go
"tap..tap...tap......tap.......tap...... ...............tap...................... ....tap..tap........tap.tap..tap...tap.. .tap"
then if you go back to idle, you may not hear it for over 2 minutes before it begins and then stops for a while...
the engine did run a little while without oil, the gauge was not working, I added oil and let it run, still same thing.
I took the pushrods out and none are bent or appear to be.
any ideas I hope you can understand from this post lol
A mechanic's stethoscope is a great $10 investment. If it is a lifter, and it sounds like it is, you can take off the valve covers, put the probe on the rocker studs and find which one it is. (It might just need adjustment) God bless, Sensei
If I get a mechanic's stethoscope, I can put it on on the studs while the engine is running? With the valve covers off, would'nt oil shoot out everywhere? DO I turn the engine on or something else?
They make clips to for the rockers so they won't spray, but you still will probably drip a little oil.
Another trick is to cut the top out of an old valve cover and bolt it on.
