I have used denatured alcohol and compressed air. Keep the natured alcohol for yourself.

You can purchase a flush gun for around $30 from an AC supplier or possibly on Ebay. Auto supplies sell a liquid that is made for this purpose. It's probably not much different that any other petroleum based cleaner but considering all the work ahead of you, I though it was a good investment.

The R12 has to be recovered, so don't you have to have the system professionally flushed?

if your R-12 has not already leaked out, take it to a shop to have it recovered. some shops will pay you for your recovered R-12. at a minimum, they will recover it for you for free.

after that, you can flush out the system yourself as described above.

hope this helps,

Mike.

Yes, if there is any left in the system. Chances are it has leaked out. After the R12 has been recovered, there is only residue left in the system which should be minimal. The purpose of flushing is to remove any oil and trash from the system. R12 uses mineral oil, 134 uses another type and I don't think they are compatible.
