Default Pictures and update

I checked out the engine last night. It turns out that it is not only one engine he is trying to get rid of, but two.

The backstory...
The seller has a friend who built engine #1 for his 69 Camaro. Camaro was wrecked. Insurance totaled it. Camaro guy gave the 350 to the seller to put in the seller's Cutlass.

The Cutlass was a gift from the seller's dad, so he wants to build it, but he doesnt know GM engines because he is a Mercedes tech by day. He came across a big block for the Cutlass, so the 350 has been sitting in his garage for a year.

Camaro guy also gave him another short block.

The seller has his Cutlass project, a baby on the way, needs space in his garage, and money for a minivan.

In general, he seems like a straight up guy who a) doesnt understand anything about Chevy engines b) was willing to tell me everything he knows, but it wasnt that much c) really just wants to clear out some space and pick up a few bucks.

The Engines...

He wants to get rid of both and is selling them as a bundle.
They have been sitting for "about a year."

Engine #1
Long block
350 casting number 3970014
Both heads are 333882
HEI dist
Weiland intake #7546
Holley double pumper
Claims it is a 2 bolt main
Claims it has hydralic lifters
Claims it has a "mild cam"
Said he "thinks it is 11:1, but he may be wrong"
Was able to turn the flywheel by hand
Looks complete like they literally pulled it straight out and put it on the floor. Pan to carb is there including flywheel, balancer, waterpump, pulleys, engine mounts, HEI, etc.

Engine #2
Short block
Casting number 3970014
Claims it has solid lifters
He said this was a racing engine that has had "300 bottles of spray run through it and it has never smoked."
Claims it is a 4 bolt main

The Pictures...

Engine 1 wide shot

Engine 1 intake and carb

Engine 1 drivers side head

Engine 1 passenger side head casting number

Engine 1 drivers side exhaust port

Engine 1 drivers side exhaust port

Engine 1 passenger side exhaust port

Engine 1 passenger side exhaust port

Engine 2 casting number

Engine 2 pistons

The Plan...

If I were to buy these, I would be inclined to tear both of them down, have the 4 bolt and the heads checked out by a machine shop, and put it back together myself. I could sell the 2 bolt block, carb, intake, water pump, etc. Would consider keeping the HEI.

And finally what you have all been waiting for...
The Price...

I talked this guy down to $350 for both and it will include some other random parts like a mini starter.

Aside from the fact that I dont have a good place to do this work (just a concrete slab in the back yard), is there any other reason not to do it?

I have a few more pictures and have probably forgotten something, so let me know if anyone wants some more info...

Sorry for the long post and thanks for the input!

$350 for both is a great deal. That intake looks too tall for the C3 hood but you can sell that along with other parts and the 2-bolt block....

the first engine with the single plane manifold, the heads exhaust
ports have been ported out to a round condition. Some clown did
that, if you do any exhaust porting you do not do any grinding on
the bottom of the exhaust port. I think I would keep my $350 and
put it toward something else.

I have a new set of chevy bow tie heads bare in the box and new
stainless steel valves I will sell for $350. they have 64cc chambers
and you have to have headers for the angle plugs. I have three 4 bolt
main blocks. Im going to buy back my 4 bolt main 454 block from my
neighbor he is not going to use it, he has decided to buy a new C/6.
I have a lot of small block parts if anyone is interested PM me.

Junk yard blocks aren't cheap anymore (when you consider he's getting two). Knowing his plans, I don't think it's a bad deal. He can also blast and paint that intake to look great too.

Default if its bigger has to be better

Pocket porting heads makes the best improvement for power, the exhaust port opening should have been ground at the top and a little on the sides nothing on the bottom to keep the port strait. there is a good reason why better heads have raised straiter exhaust ports.
somebody with the eveything bigger is better mentality has messed
with the heads
