Default 76 Corvette transmission install - help?

I am restoring my 76 vette after Katrina. I replaced a 700r4 tranmission with a th350. Of course it does not fit!! The mounting bracket which attaches to the crossmember does not reach the th350 transmission mounting bolts. I think I need to refit an original mounting plate to the crossmemember. Does anyone have experience with this? Where can I get an original mounting plate? Thanks!!

Might have been easier to stick with another 700-R4. Generally the crossmembers & driveshafts have been changed to get the 700-R4 into a Vette. You may need to visit a Corvette junkyard to get a new crossmember, especially if the crossmember in question has been modded for the 700-R4. You will need a new driveshaft as the 700-R4 is longer than a TH350, therefore your DS is too short, and the end that goes in the tranny may have the wrong spline count. I also believe that the shifter cable may need to be changed.

IMO, you would be better served by going back in with another 700-R4. Maybe the place where you got the TH350 will take it in trade on a 700-R4.

i replaced my th350 with a 700r4 so i am familar with the process.....why are you putting in a th350??? you would be better off with another 700r4.

heres your issues, with out knowing all the details i will assume the 700r4 was installed correctly using off the shelf hardware

1. you need a different crossmember which may impact your exhaust syatem
2. you need to have your drive shaft lenghtened
3. your shift detent is different and may not work properly

I was trying to go back to stock. Also I couldn't afford a new 700r4. Looks like it will cost me more anyway. The crossmember looks stock - I think the previous owner had a new bracket made to accomodate the R4.

Look on www.car-part.com you should be able to find a used 700R4 fairly reasonable. Any of them will do since you already have the tail setup for your car. You can look for 700R4 or 4L60, anything 88-93 from a V8 is OK (4 pin or 5 pin, not 4L60E). 2wd Truck/Suburban, F-body, B-body, big Vans. Stay away from 82-87 if possible, although for a bone stock car they are ok if cheap enough. Stay away from V6 versions (Astro van and F-body).

That would be a shame to go back to a TH350. My buddy built a 700R4 for my 75 for about $600. If you've already got the crossmember, shifter, and wiring in place I wouldn't consider a 350.

I did a quick search & found a boatload of trannies & cheap too. Since you'd want to rebuild it it would only need to be in OK condition.
