I have been looking around online and see that for a 78 model you can replace the fuel sending unit through the top without dropping the tank. Can the rear pace car spoiler be left in place or does it need to be removed to do this?
I may be wrong but I can't see how you can get that unit out through the gas fill pipe. You have to loosen the cam lock underneath in any case so why not just take it out the bottom. The gas tank does not have to be removed.
My unit looks completely different than what you have pictured there, on corvettefaq.com there is an article showing how to remove it from the top, but I wanted to know if i needed to remove the pace car spoiler or not.

If you can lift the lid to refuel...you can remove the lid assembly and access the sending unit. As I recall the spoiler rides underneath the lid opening.
In my 82 the sending unit is easy to replace. Just remove the lid, bezel and boot. Unbolt the unit, turn and lift out at an angle. Reinstall in reverse order. Takes less than 30 minuites to remove change the pump and reinstall.
