I'm having problems starting my '82 Vette. The engine turns over nice and strong but it's not firing up. The first time this happened, I took it to a shop and they told me the injectors weren't getting a signal from the ecm. The said they tapped the ecm and it started, ran for a bit, and then died so they had to replace the ecm. It ran fine for a week and now it's doing the same thing. Grrrrr! What else could it be?
Could it be the fuel pump? I don't notice any fuel being injected when I crank the engine. I plan to take the car back to the shop and have them recheck it. I feel like they charged me for an ecm for no reason.
Yes you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key to the on position with out starting. I just replaced my fuel pump in my 82 and the car fired right up. If you are not getting gas through the injectors when trying to start you probably have a fuel delivery issue or blocked injectors. I would start by changing the fuel filter and the pump on the sending unit in the tank. While you have the sending unit out of the tank go ahead and drain the tank and clean it out with a sponge. Make sure you put a new fule strainer sock on the new pump. you have to buy it seperately. This proccess takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Oh and by the way I could not locate a new gasket for the sending unit anywhere so I had to use my old one. If yours is not in good shape you may have to make one out of some 1/8th inch rubber. Also put a good fuel system/fuelinjector cleaner in the first tank of gas you run through the car. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
